Pat and Bruce's Town Of Richmond,
Virginia
The
Richmond area is actually made up of Richmond, Ashland, Colonial Heights,
Hopewell, Petersburg and the surrounding counties of Hanover, Henrico,
Chesterfield, Goochland and Powhatan. (There are more but these are the major
ones.) In Virginia, you live either in a city or a county, not both, and pay
property taxes only to your locality. Each area has its own government,
services and school system.
Richmond is the capitol of Virginia, with active business,
cultural, educational, recreational and government facilities, and yet, it
retains an atmosphere of Southern charm and friendliness. On Easter Sunday, we
parade in our best bonnets on famous Monument Avenue. The quality of life and
attractive business climate have brought headquarters for 5 of the Fortune 500
companies (the most for a moderate size area.)
What can you do in Richmond? We have a symphony, opera,
ballet, numerous museums including a science museum and I-Max Theater,
universities, parks including Civil War battlefields, and a river runs
through us! The James River is a source of beauty and recreation. We are
at the fall line of the James and have a deep water terminal just east of
town.
We
are 2 hours or less by interstate highways from almost anything else you may
want to do:
- The
Blue Ridge Mountains and Appalachian Trail (and snow skiing)
- Virginia Beach, or 3 1/2 hours to the NC Outer Banks
- Washington, DC the Smithsonian, Air & Space Museum,
National Portrait Gallery, National Zoo, National Arboretum, tours of the White
House, Capitol, and more...
- Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens
- Charlottesville, the home of Thomas Jefferson and the University of
Virginia
Of
course, we had a few years to develop these amenities. First explored by
Captain Christopher Newport in 1607, Fort Charles was established in 1644.
Colonel William Byrd, II, the Father of Richmond, put the city on its present
course in 1733. We incorporate our history into our present and our
future.
